About Us

A brainstorm of the elder Chandler siblings, James Chandler Jr., Teola Tillman and Eldora Gray, birth the concept of the Chandler Turner scholarship fund. The scholarship honors the legacy of the Chandler parents, Ellen and James Chandler Senior who were strong visionaries with their children in encouraging higher education.

Our parents and grandparents James Chandler Sr. and Ellen Turner Chandler valued education since having been part of the great migration. The experience of African Americans moving north for a better way of life inspired the true desire to make sure their 8 children received an education. James and Ellen Chandler were strong visionaries with their children. Being prepared in this new city was the utmost importance toward success. They encouraged all their children to complete a course of study, training in education or serve your country.

Teola Tillman the eldest female sibling of the Chandler family wanted to develop a way for the family to give back to the community. She started planning and preparing the outlined business plan for the scholarship program. The Chandler Turner Scholarship progressed and began.
 
Teola along with her siblings Eldora Chandler Gray and James Chandler JR. formatted and continued to executed The Chandler Turner Scholarship in 1999. At that time a ll the siblings donated from their personal funds. We all participated in a group night with family and friends who donated to our first fundraiser by attending the New DinnerTheater.

The recipients must reside in the greater Kansas City area, they must be of African American heritage, they have to be a graduating senior and be accepted to a post-secondary institution to apply.

The family expanded the sphere of the Scholarship Fund by applying for and achieving the 501(c)(3) Non Profit Charitable Organization designation.

We have a Board of Directors comprised of community members and educators.
